What We Do

Keeping Lakefield Beautiful

One of the Society’s missions is to beautify public grounds. The Lakefield Horticultural Society maintains the gardens in Centotaph Park in downtown Lakefield and a Pollinator Garden at Isabel Morris Park as well as designing and purchasing both hanging baskets and pots for downtown Lakefield.

Centennial GardenThe largest garden in Cenotaph Park, the Centennial bed, contains many hydrangea and other shrubs, various perennials and a range of annuals. With help from many Society volunteers, member Bev Thompson ensures these gardens are planted, watered, weeded and deadheaded to keep them looking great throughout the growing season

Sundial GardenThe attractive SunDial garden is nearby and is so named because it has a standing sundial.

Summer Hanging BasketsThe Horticultural Society pays for 19 hanging baskets that adorn the main street of Lakefield. These are watered and fertilized regularly by Selwyn Township staff, and hence provide a stunning floral display!

Pollinator Garden at Isabel Morris ParkIn 2017 the Society established a pollinator garden in Isabel Morris Park (Who was Isabel Morris?). This was in response to the alarming news that populations of many of native pollinators–birds, bees, bats and butterflies–are declining drastically. Mostly native plants that provide nectar and pollen throughout the growing season were chosen for this garden. Silver-spotted Skipper on Purple ConeflowerMembers, Anne Stone and David Lyons, manage this garden with the help of many Society volunteers. In 2021 the the garden’s size was doubled and it now contains more than 50 different pollinator-friendly perennials, annuals and shrubs. Maintenance practices in the garden also support overwintering of native pollinators. Read more about the pollinator garden by clicking this link.

All of these gardens flourish because they are cared for by many Society volunteers. Gardening together creates a  beautiful landscape, supports pollinators, provides an opportunity to educate others about environmentally sustainable cultivation practices AND brings together many of our members to form important social connections!

Educating the Next Generation

Besides educating our members through varied and entertaining monthly speakers and the Newsletter, the Society also provides a Bursary Award each semester to a deserving Fleming College student in pursuing an education in the horticultural or environmental field.

The major fundraiser for these activities is the highly successful spring plant sale, held on the Saturday of the May long weekend.  See our “Sales” page for more details.

Special Thanks:  We  thank the maintenance staff of Selwyn Township for watering the hanging baskets each year.  If it weren’t for this effort of the maintenance crew, the baskets would not look nearly so beautiful. Your efforts are very much appreciated by the Lakefield District Horticultural Society and the community of Lakefield.
